The Decision Point

The Decision Point

Becoming a “Way of Life” Witness

Have you ever met someone who is an amazing “way of life” witness? Someone who is always sharing their faith at work, in a parking lot, over coffee, or wherever they happen to be?

I certainly have.

In fact, the ministry of Evangelism Explosion was built by people just like that, including Dr. D. James Kennedy. The man who taught Dr. Kennedy to witness, Kennedy Smartt, was certainly like that too. And the man who taught Kennedy Smartt, Bill Iverson, was absolutely like that. I know because I’ve had the privilege of going out witnessing with him before.

These individuals didn’t just talk about evangelism. Sharing their faith was simply part of their everyday life.

A Challenge to Share Jesus

I remember a time at one of our celebration banquets in Arden, North Carolina. One of our International Field Workers was in town and joined us. He sat down, put his arm around me, and loudly asked,

“John, when’s the last time you shared Jesus with anyone?”

By God’s grace, I had shared the day before. What a relief!

When I told him, he said, “Great! Because if it had been a long time ago, I was going to leave! Can you imagine a ministry with a president who doesn’t share his or her faith?”

His comment made a strong point. Sharing the Gospel isn’t just something we talk about. It’s something we are called to do.

Learning How to Share the Gospel

I had the privilege of writing a book called Your Story Counts. In it, I share the story of a man who shared the Gospel all over the world. He would approach people, ask thoughtful questions, invite them to consider their eternity, and then send them on their way with a cheerful, “Toodooledo!”

It’s a wonderful story. Through simple conversations, he led thousands of people to Jesus across the globe.

So why are these “way of life” witnesses able to be so bold?

I believe there are two reasons.

First, they know what to say.

Second, they have decided to say it.

They know what to say because they’ve taken the time to learn how to have Gospel conversations. Learning how to share your faith clearly takes time and energy, but it is incredibly rewarding.

One helpful step is building a “witnessing toolbox.” This might include Gospel tracts, a clear personal testimony, a questionnaire pad, thoughtful conversation starters, and the one tool you always carry with you, your hand.

Learning a simple Gospel hand presentation can prepare you to share your faith clearly and confidently wherever you are.

The Daily Decision to Witness

Perhaps even more important than knowing what to say is making the decision to do it.

Dr. Kennedy had a small habit whenever he was about to begin sharing the Gospel. He would lightly smack his knee. He probably didn’t even realize he was doing it, but to me it marked the moment he chose to step out in faith.

Sharing your faith often begins with a simple decision.

We recently released a 7-day Lent devotional focusing on the Gospel of Jesus Christ and our calling to share it. During Lent, we remember the cost of the cross and renew our commitment to live and speak as Christ’s witnesses each day.

Sharing the Gospel is a daily decision. Why not set aside a week to focus intentionally on that calling?
